Experience Steal My Coffee

Cream being poured into a cup of coffee, creating swirling patterns.

Real Stories

Steal My Coffee isn't your typical autism story. It's a raw, funny, and sometimes chaotic dive into our family life where stolen coffee is just the tip of the iceberg.

Join us each week on Brewed Conversations as we navigate meltdowns, unexpected joys, and the quest to keep Danell safe, happy, well-fed, sugar-free, decaffeinated, and out of everyone else's plates and mugs.

To protect our privacy, the names have been changed. These episodes may discuss mental health, medical procedures, and other sensitive topics that some listeners might find triggering.

I do not endorse any specific medication or treatment. Please consult a qualified healthcare provider for any health concerns before making decisions about your health or treatments.

James Castle and Marlon Mullen

Marlon Mullon (CURRENT NIAD ARTIST) is autistic or, put another way, he has autism spectrum disorder, and is for the most part non-verbal. It isn’t entirely clear how much he can read, but he certainly has his own understanding of meaning when it comes to words. Specifically regarding the content of his paintings, he has not verbally communicated at length his intent or fascination with the images that he copies. However, his paintings are sufficient in informing us of the nuances of what he sees

Marlon Mullen At JTT Gallery

James Kalm is a fan of “outsider art” and is on a constant lookout for emerging talent within the field.  Not unusually then, while touring the 2019 Whitney Biennial, your correspondent was intrigued by the work of Marlon Mullen.  Fast forward three and a half years, and Mullen is having a one person show “On Broadway” … This exhibition presents works from the past twenty-five years, and provides a cross section of the artists themes and techniques. Mullen, who is on the autism spectrum, is nonverbal yet employs text (much of it from art magazine covers or advertisements) as a major subject of his pictures. Using an intuitive sense of composition and color, the “art cover” paintings possess a naive yet cynically comic critique of the “highbrow,” high fashion art world depicted in the media.  This program was recorded Jan. 6, 2023

Marlon Mullen Painting his final piece for solo show

Step inside this lively community arts center as painter Marlon Mullen makes the last piece for his major solo exhibition at MoMA. For nearly 40 years, Mullen has been based at the NIAD Art Center, a progressive art studio for artists with developmental disabilities in his native Richmond, California.
